Ken Harker WM5R
2004 North American QSO Party, January, Phone - K5TR M/2

Having come close to winning the August version of the North American QSO Party, phone, in the multi-operator, two-transmitter category, George and I decided to try out the January version of the contest.

It was a real surprise to me to see how much higher the QSO totals are in the January version of the contest than they are in the August version of the contest. There were also a lot more serious competitors in the M/2 class. I suppose this should have been obvious to me: winter conditions on HF are a lot different from summer conditions on HF, after all.

We had a lot of noise on the low bands, especially on 160 meters, but what really hurt us was the poor conditions on 10 meters. If it had been open just a little bit more, we could have had much bigger numbers on that band, and been a little more competitive with the west coast stations.
